Mag Wheels: 1948 Hudson Commodore in Special Interest Autos
The last, and for my money, the best orphan article in the April 2004 edition of Special Interest Autos is Jim Richardson's Driving Mrs. Chapin. It's a Drive Report of Roy D. Chapin's widow's 1948 Derham-bodied Hudson Commodore Eight.

It's fun to read about Richardson's struggle to drive the car. He laments, "Although stylish, it's one of the most uncomfortable cars I have ever driven. The driver's seat is stationary, and I am 6'2" and no lightweight. The Hudson's steering wheel touches my admittedly oversize belly. My knees are jammed under the dash to the point where I can barely work the pedals, and the seat is so close to the dash and upright that I find myself cocking my head downward to look out the window." I sympathize with Richardson. I'm a tall guy who questions his sanity every time he squeezes himself into his Metropolitan.

I think it's wonderful when we admit that we can love our orphan cars warts and all.

Mag Wheels: 1940 Bantam in Special Interest Autos
I love the Drive Report about the '40 Bantam woodie wagon in the April 2004 issue of Special Interest Autos.

Ray Thursby describes how hard it is to get in and out of the car. He felt like "a circus bear piloting a tricycle."

With the Bantam pumping out only 22 horsepower, I think the tricycle might get you across town faster.

Bantams are rare wheels, and articles about them are pretty scarce, so we're glad to be able to report on this uncommon magazine article sighting.

Mag Wheels: AMC Design in Special Interest Autos
It was really interesting to see Patrick Foster's article on the work of the AMC design department in the 1970's. Look for his article in the April 2004 issue of Special Interest Autos. It's called Designing the Future at AMC.

I was especially interested in the Concept 80 cars. Buried in the Torq-O film archive is a short news film about the cars of Concept 80. The article's pictures are in black and white, but our film is in color, and it's stunning to see the Concept AM Van (a rich red) and the Concept Jeep II in full color.

Mag Wheels: '69 AMX in Cars & Parts
We've been prowling the magazine racks at our local bookstore, and we have to tell you about the great article by longtime AMC club member Darryl Salisbury in the April 2004 edition of Cars & Parts.

Darryl tells in great detail about the acquisition and restoration of a special one-off '69 AMX.

This beautifully restored beast came from the factory with the blue/white/red "Scheme 2" paint job first seen on the cars that Craig and Lee Breedlove used to set 90 speed and endurance records on a Texas track in February, 1968.

Darryl acquired the car in rough shape (aren't they always that way?) in 1984 and spent the next 13 years not only restoring it but tracking down its history. As it turns out, the car was a Canadian race track giveaway. Darryl's AMX is super rare, because very few AMXs received the special paint job from the factory.

By the way, if any of you are interested in seeing and hearing what Craig Breedlove had to say about the AMX back in 1968, check out our product Orphan Sounds. The audio portion of the CD contains an excerpt of an interview that Breedlove gave to an Atlanta TV station during his AMX promotional tour in 1968. If you pop the CD into your computer, you can see the video portion of the story. The film came from the personal collection of AMC Public Relations exec John Conde, and it's one of a kind. A Torq-O exclusive.
